Directors Note
Holy/Broken is my first community-based, devised, applied theatre project. It was created in response to the emerging mental health crisis of 2020. It began as a tribute to the tragic passing of Christian mental health advocate Jarred Wilson and evolved into a broader exploration of mental health stigma within the Christian church.
The piece addresses critical issues such as panic attacks, depression, and anxiety, culminating in an open-ended invitation for the audience to continue the dialogue beyond the performance. This project marked my first foray into applied theatre, blending storytelling with social engagement, and it has since become a foundational experience that continues to shape how I approach directing and developing passion projects.
Holy/Broken reaffirms the power of theatre as a space for empathy, reflection, and community connection—showing us that performance can be both art and meaningful social intervention.
